Introducing Cane Creek Quilt Pattern

Inspiration is everywhere. And the inspiration for this quilt is a place near and dear to my heart…the mountains of western North Carolina! In the heart of Jackson County, there is a tiny creek called Cane Creek with mountain peaks all around. Obviously, the mountain peaks needed to be flying geese. And obviously I needed to make a quilt!

This pattern uses the convenient and efficient four-at-a-time flying geese method. I’ve modified it a bit in order to allow for trimming which means accuracy. If you’ve worked with my patterns before, you know that piecing a slightly oversized flying geese unit and trimming it down leads to accurate points, as well as easier piecing of the blocks. Accurate flying geese sew together accurately!

My trimming method of choice is the bloc loc! Buy them from your local quilt store or favorite online shop, but if you’re going to buy from Amazon, here is an affiliate link: 2×4 flying geese bloc loc and 4×8 flying geese bloc loc. These are the two sizes needed for the Cane Creek Quilt.

I needed to photograph the quilt in this special place! Thanks to Miss Georgia, the owner of the perfect turquoise barn, I found a location near Cane Creek. I have been passing this barn for years; this photo is twenty years in the making.

I think you need some behind the scenes of this photoshoot moment. I recruited my Dad to hold the “super light” quilt and tied the other end to a telephone pole. My Dad has long been a reluctant assistant for these opportunities. His favorite part is when I yell, “be taller”!! My whole family was along for this shoot with my brother and mother running traffic control. Traffic control means screaming “CAR!” so everyone can scurry out of the road. It’s a fancy operation here at May Chappell HQ.

This quilt is a fun make that will help you work on your piecing, especially the flying geese. I can’t wait to see what you make. As always, the pattern features a range of sizes from runner to king. It’s available for purchase here. I have made a few kits as well; they include everything except background and backing for the throw size. They’re available here.

I’m offering an online workshop for Cane Creek! It’ll be on zoom; I’d love for you to join the fun! You can register here and find the supply list here.

Happy New Pattern Day everyone!
